The United World Writing Project is a prose contest for young writers worldwide. Two winners will be chosen from our middle school category (grades 6-8) and two from high school (grades 9-12.) Submissions must be 300 words or fewer. Deadline for submissions is April 25. Winners will be honored at the May 23 Lift Kids United World Campaign at the Target Center where they will read their pieces.
The theme of The United World Writing Project is inspired by Mahatma Gandhi and his quote “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”
One of our most influential political and spiritual visionaries, Gandhi led a simple life grounded in deep conviction to the truth. He was a living example of a man who improved the world by changing himself first—changing his thoughts, his mind, his world. His practice of non-violent protest and civil disobedience led India to independence, a beacon of hope and truth.
Writing prompt: “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” Explore what Gandhi’s quote means to you. You might choose to write about someone in your life who exemplifies the meaning of his quote. What makes him or her a good example to others?
Or, if change must first begin within you, how could you change the world for the better by changing yourself?
